He lived in the Waynesville vicinity his entire life. He was married to Patricia Irene Davis (dates unknown). They had two sons. They were later divorced. He worked in the restaurant business. He died on 12 July 1988 in Clyde, NC at the age of 66. He was interred at Green Hill Cemetery.
