A lifelong resident and community volunteer, Richard Lee Hamilton, age 76 of Martinsville, passed from this life on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 2:37 pm surrounded by his loving family and in the comfort of his own home. Richard was one of six children born to the late Albert Milo and DeLena Iris (Branam) Hamilton. He was born Thursday, October 1, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Richard moved to Martinsville at the age of four. He graduated from Martinsville High School with the class of 1962 and on July 2, 1966 he married the love of his life, Joyce Kay (Griffin) Hamilton.

Richard was no stranger to work and spent many years as owner/operator of R.L. Hamilton & Sons Roofing Company in Martinsville. He roofed countless commercial and residential buildings throughout the 1970's and 1980's. Richard also drove a school bus for the MSD of Martinsville and worked for the Indiana State Highway Department, finally retiring in 1997.

Richard's career life was admirable, yet his life as a community volunteer and leader was what will forever be remembered and respected. He was a member of the River Valley Christian Church, Sons of the American Legion Post #230, Martinsville Elks Lodge #1349, a charter and lifetime member of the Morgan County Antique Machinery Association, where he had served as president, vice president and was a current board member and a 35-year member of the Morgan County Fair Board. During his years on the fair board, Richard served as Vice President, he built countless fair buildings and other structures, and was singlehandedly the most instrumental person in our current day Demolition Derby, bringing structure, safety and regulation. Richard was the longest running Demolition Derby Superintendent in the history of the Morgan County Fair and was inducted into the Morgan County Fair Hall of Fame in 2017.

In his younger years, Richard was well-known as an avid and accomplished drag racer and a well-respected little league basketball and softball coach. He had a love for children, drawing him into coaching and years of 4-H. He himself was a 10-year 4-H Member and had been awarded Reserve Grand Champion Steer.

Those who knew him would undoubtedly agree that Richard's love for his family and community was evident and worthy, though his willingness to help others will forever be revered.

As his health faded over the past several years, Richard was blessed to have the time to dedicate to his grandchildren, in which he treasured. He also enjoyed collecting antique farm toys, canes and yardsticks.

He will be greatly missed by the entire community, as well as his family and friends including his wife of fifty-two years, Joyce Hamilton of Martinsville; daughter, Becki (Kim Brennan) Hamilton of Martinsville; son, Tyler (Melissa) Hamilton of Martinsville; two sisters, Helen (Frank) Dean of Gosport and Phyllis (Fred) Fleener of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Shane, Taylor and Morgan Hamilton, Allison (Jeremy) Bailey and Madison Bales and one great grandson, Hudson Bailey.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 from 4-8:00 PM and one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center, Martinsville. Rev. Kevin Able will conduct a service celebrating Richard's life on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home and he will be laid to rest following the service in New South Park Cemetery, Martinsville.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Morgan County Fair, c/o Neal & Summers.
