Wife of (1) Johann Heinrich TROUT (1810-1841) and (2) Cornelius G. MAUK (1810-1880)

Abbagal MOORE was the daughter of Henry MOORE who operated a grist mill on Island Run, York Twp, Morgan, OH.

Several different spellings of Abbagal have been found (Abigail, Abigall, Abbigail, Abigal, etc.). The "Abbagal" spelling is based on her son, George Washington Trout's transcription of the Mauk family Bible made in 1893. In contrast, the "Abbigail" spelling was used in her probate file. TROUT family descendants tend to use the Abbagal spelling, while the MAUK family tends to use the Abigail spelling.

Abbagal married 1st to Johann Heinrich TROUT 25 Dec 1833 in Hocking County, OH. Four children were born to this first union, Jane B., 28 Aug 1834; Samuel E., 28 May 1837; George Washington, 25 Dec 1838; and Julia B., 30 Jun 1841. Henry died in about 1841 of the "milk sickness," most likely in Deerfield Twp, Morgan, OH.

Abbagal married 2nd to blacksmith Cornelius G. MAUK on 24 Apr 1845 in Logan, Hocking, OH, who had just recently lost his first wife, Sarah NELSON some months before. Cornelius brought five children from his previous marriage. Seven more children were born to Abbagal and Cornelius MAUK and included Gilbert Byron, 17 Aug 1846; Isabel A., Jan 1850; Mary Ann, 1850; Amanda, 1 Jul 1853; William Vermillion,18 Aug 1853; Edward Cornelius, 8 Sep 1856; and Francis Ann Jeanette, Mar 1861.

In 1854 Abbagal and Cornelius MAUK together with their combined families moved from Hocking County, Ohio, to Clark County, Illinois. At this point, they had 14 children between them, although some of the older children may have stayed behind or have been married by this time. The family located at Dupont Crossing about half way between Casey and Martinsville on the Old National Road where Cornelius, a highly skilled blacksmith, opened a blacksmith shop. Abbagal's surviving son by her first marriage, George Washington Trout, eventually (1872) established his own farm .5 mile south of the Mauk Blacksmith Shop.
