Lee Roy Hays, 73, long-time Deming-area farmer, died Friday, February 20, 2004 in Deming.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday February 24, 2004 at the Copper and Elm Church of Christ in Deming, with Don Hartman officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Deming.
Pallbearers will be Dean Moore, Travis Barth, Garry Ruebush, Keith Armstrong, Charlie Plymale and Tim Hartman. Honorary bearers are Jerrold Hays, Don Hays, Sam Hays, Tim Poudrier, Paul Offutt, Lee White and Rodger Gardner.
Lee Roy was born in Henrietta, Texas on February 19, 1931. At age 16, he came to Deming from Texas, with his brother Jerrold, to work on the Leon Hurst farm harvesting beans. He later worked farming for Oliver Ruebush and on the Nellie Scott farm before purchasing his own farm in 1954 in the Red Mountain area west of Deming, where he has lived since. In the early days of his farming career he also worked in construction building houses in the Marisol addition near Memorial School and was a gin superintendent for Luna Cotton Co-op. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ.
His wife, Susan Hays, of Deming and their daughter, Hannah of the home survive him. Three other children also survive him, Catherine Ruebush of Deming, Yvette Hays of Las Cruces and Yvonne Barth of Lubbock, Texas. Also surviving are three brothers and one sister, Jerrold (T. J.) Hays, Laverne Holmes, Sam Hays and Donnie Hays all of Deming. Grandchildren surviving him are Tamelyn Ruebush, Clinton Ruebush, Larrisa Plymale, Crystal Armstrong, and Travis Barth. 10 great-grandchildren also survive him.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Lee and Lillian Hays and his sister Ruby Hays. Also preceding him are his grandson, David Hays, his daughter Heather Hays and his son Jerry Hays. He is also preceded in death by Helen Moore Hays, the mother of his oldest children.
Lee Roy was an uncomplicated man of his word, who worked the land faithfully to provide for his family.He was patient, mild-tempered and quick to forgive.His advice was always sound. He was known for his skill at whittling and spent many happy hours hunting and fishing with family and friends. He loved to talk about what roads to travel to reach your destination and was steadfast in following the road the Lord gave to him to follow. Those who knew and loved him are assured he has now reached his final destination with God, His Father.
