He was born in McDowell County, WV, on September 4, 1933, to the late Simon Edgar Spence and Gladys Williams Spence.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Spence; two sisters: Lillian Higgins, Dorothy Spence; and nine brothers: Brewster, Charlie, Claude, Edgar, Hollis, James, Ray, Walter, and Thomas Spence.
Mr. Spence had served in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Geneva Austin Spence of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Andrew Dalton of Stuart; one son, Charlie Lee Spence of Walnut Cove, NC; four grandchildren: Maggie Houchins and husband, Michael, Andrea Dalton and husband, Bryan Gilley, Patrick Dalton, Cristina Danielf; one great-grandchild, Lyric Houchins; three sisters: Gracie Sigmon of Bassett, Josie Bowman of Stuart, Virginia Brown of Lexington, NC; one brother, Raymond Spence of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Spence Family Cemetery with Pastor Jackie Spence officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
