Joseph (Neal) Wheeler 1936 ~ 2006
Our father, Joseph (Neal) Wheeler, returned home December 28, 2006 after a valiant fight with lung cancer. Born in Salt Lake City March 2, 1936 to James A. and Edna Perrenoud Wheeler. He married Betty Jean Pearson. In his early years, Neal drove cab, long haul trucks and worked at Hill Air Force Base as a machinist. Neal was a tool and die maker and machinist by trade. He was also a local gunsmith and gun enthusiast. Neal was a past president and longtime member of the Ogden Valley Muzzleloaders, Great Basin Brigade. He was a member of the Utah Stuntman Association and a founding member of the Old West Players. He was a range officer at the Holiday Gun Club. He was a gunsmith at Great Salt Lake Trading Company for many years. Neal became a well known gunsmith, renowned for developing large bore, small frame custom revolvers, and was the proprietor of Wheeler Topping Custom Guns for more than 30 years. He enjoyed target and competition shooting, camping, hunting, and model trains. Neal is survived by his son, Kim B. Wheeler, Ruston, WA; daughter, Cindy (R.K.) Shelton, Salt Lake; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; brother, Clifford (Thelma) Wheeler, Grand Junction, CO; sister, Ione Hogue Riverside, CA; and brother-in-law, Dan Hendon, Hoisington, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Carol (Dale) Finlinson, Erma (Jim) Willden, and Peggy Hendon. Neal leaves behind his children, many great friends, and associates who will miss him dearly. The family wishes to thank University of Utah Medical Center, Huntsman Cancer Center, South Davis Hospice, and Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma. Interment will be for family and close friends Saturday, January 13, 2007, 2 p.m. at the Redwood Memorial Cemetery, Redwood Road.
