James Mancil Morrison Jones was the youngest son of Davis Mancil and Rhoda (Morrison) Jones and born in . Apparently, the family chose to move to Oregon from Missouri, but they did settle in Lane County which was known for their religious communities.

James "Jim" was born after his parents moved to Oregon, and 7 years after his brother Henry and oldest sister Eva. There are two birth certificates for him regarding his middle name. Mancil was his father's middle name (and a generational family name) and Morrison was his mother's maiden surname. In all formal documents he used Mancil as his formal name.

From records found, he worked side-by-side with his father Davis in Lakeview, Oregon logging property. which is some distance from the family living in Junction City (near Eugene) at the time but there were other Joneses in the area. It is unknown whether it was to clear land for farming or they were loggers. It was there that a very young James watched his father die in his arms from a wagon accident.

James also enlisted in the army cavalry and fought in Texas on the Rio Grande during Mexican skirmishes with Pancho Villa. While this does seem a bit farfetched, at that time the most northern point of Texas was very close to southeastern border of Oregon.

After the war, James lived with his sister Eva in Portland, and eventually married at age 34 to widow Florence (Arnold) Williamson who had three children from her previous marriage, Leonard Frank, Serapta Marsadies (Sadie), and Willie Dallas (Bill). They were joined by two daughters Nellie (May) and Eva Ruth (Eve). After his wife's death in 1946, he married Lula (Daniel) Sportsman/Eunson who was 13 years older.

James death in December 1955 at age 63 was caused from falling out of a tree working as an arborist missing the birth of his daughter May's, first child by six months.

As with his mother, sister, brother, and first wife, James was buried at Rose City Cemetery in Portland, OR.
