He was the son of Trezevant Calhoun Hawpe and mother unknown.

John R. Hawpe, who has been prominently identified with the agricultural interests of Johnson county for many years, was born in Weakly county, Tennessee, January 17, 1845, and is a son of Tresvant Hawpe, a native of the same State. The father removed to Texas with his family in 1846, settling in Dallas county, where he endured all the privations and vicissitudes of life on the frontier. He was one of the first settlers in Dallas county, was Sheriff of the county two terms, and was Colonel of his regiment in the late war. He met with a violent and untimely death in Dallas in 1863, when he was stabbed by Dan Caster.

John R. Hawpe remained in Dallas county from early infancy until the beginning of hostilities between the North and South. In 1861 he enlisted in Company E, Third Texas Regiment, under Captain D.M. Short; he participated in the battles of Opothohola, I.T., Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and many others. In 1863 he was discharged because he was under age; he was at that time at Tupelo, and returned home, but re-enlisted in Company C, Second Regiment, under Colonel B. Warren Stone, Captain Miller's company. With this regiment he was in the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Yellow Bayon, and was in a number of skirmishes through Louisiana and Arkansas. After the declaration of peace Mr. Hawpe went back to his home, and from the carnage of battle turned to the tilling of the soil.

In Dallas county, in 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Collistia Johnson, a daughter of Colonel Johnson, a native of Brown county, Illinois. Of this union eleven children were born: Corinna E., deceased; Lula T., deceased; Willie Y; Bertie E., deceased; Minnie M., deceased; Edgar H.; Nannie J.; Edner E., deceased; and three who died in infancy. The mother of this family died May 12, 1883. In 1888, in the month of February, Mr. Hawpe removed to Johnson county, and there he married Mrs. Nannie Linn, widow of R. M. Linn, who resided near Caddo Peak, Johnson county, and daughter of Christopher Heath, a native of Indiana. Our subject is a member of the Farmers' Alliance, and affiliates with the Democratic party. He belongs to the Christian Church, and in all the walks of life is faithful to his convictions.
