Dr. Nelson Harvey Shub, age 76, of Oxford, CT passed away peacefully on Monday, December 24th. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Linda Lustig Shub; four devoted daughters, Rebekah (Matthew Epstein), Bethany (Rick Gibbs), Jennifer (Scott Leiman) and Lindsey Shub (James Brackett); and seven loving grandchildren, Benjamin, Shoshana, Gabrielle, Talia, Amelia, Jack, and Annabelle. As a family man, he embraced a broad legacy, loving his nieces, Jamie, Benay, Shara, Tamara and Rachel, nephew, Aaron, and their families.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1942 to Doctor William E. Shub, and Beatrice Rapoport Shub, both originally from Philadelphia, Nelson outlived his two siblings, younger brother Dr. Steven Shub and sister Ronnie Sinaikin. As the eldest son, he proudly led the Shub family.
Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nelson graduated from Boston University School of Medicine, and performed resident training at Beth Israel Hospital (Brookline, MA), Western Pennsylvania Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA), Tufts New England Medical Center, St. Margaret Hospital, Carney Hospital and Cambridge City Hospital (greater Boston, MA). In addition to running a renowned and widely-respected private practice in Southington, Connecticut for over 20 years, Nelson was an innovator (co-developer of Outpatient Mammography Care Centers), Chief of Staff at Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington, and a vocal advocate in state and national legislatures for standard-of-care based medical malpractice reform.
Nelson’s medical impact extends far beyond the hundreds of lives he directly shepherded in as an Obstetrician. His surgical dexterity, widely regarded as magical by a generation of doctors he trained at UCONN Medical Center, Bradley Memorial, New Britain General, and Bridgeport Hospital led to the adoption of several proprietary surgical techniques as solutions to previously intractable medical complications. Furthermore, Nelson’s devotion to his patients' well-being, regardless of race, religion, creed or financial capacity, forged an indelible moral scaffold around his technical legacy for his students and the greater medical community to aspire towards.
When not wearing scrubs, Nelson’s magnanimous presence, laced with quick humor, evoked a warm welcome that would easily drown out the crack of his 300-yard golf drive. He was an avid leader in the Jewish communities of Waterbury, Cheshire, and Meriden. Nelson was a compassionate listener and a problem solver. Leader, supporter, teacher, mentor, healer, friend, father, husband, Zeyda - Dr. Nelson Shub will forever be missed and cherished.
