Born William Long, the son of George and Agnes Long of Cumberland, Maryland, Rev. Father Valentine Long, O.F.M., entered the Order of Friars Minor in 1921, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1927. With advanced degrees in English and theology, he was a professor of English Literature at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., from 1930 to 1940, and at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., from 1945 to 1957. He was then the guardian and superior of the Franciscan Novitiate in Lafayette, N.J., and he continued to teach and serve as a chaplain until retiring in 1973. He went to Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J., in 1990, where he died at age 95. Father Valentine was a gifted preacher and orator, and a prolific writer, publishing many articles and religious pamphlets. He was the author of ten books, including, "Not on Bread Alone," "They Have Seen His Star," "Magnificent Man," "The Faith in Song and Story," and "The Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi."
