Martha Lou Anders of Garrison, New York, 80, died on Monday, April 7, 2008 after a long illness.

Born and raised in Diana, Texas, she was the fifth daughter and ninth child of John D. and Bina Buie. In 1948 she was graduated from East Texas State Teachers College and taught in the Judson Grove School System until her marriage to Curtis L. Anders at West Point in June, 1949.

While her husband was away during the Korean War, Mrs. Anders was director of the Student Union Building at her alma mater in Commerce, Texas. After settling in Garrison in 1956, she did graduate work at Columbia University, and for several years during the 1960s she was a member of the Haldane High School’s English faculty in Cold Spring, New York.

During Mrs. Anders’ 52-year residence in Garrison she was at one time or another president of almost every local organization to which she belonged, notably the Philipstown Garden Club.

Plans for a memorial service in the near future were incomplete at press time.

Her husband survives her, as do one sister, Mrs. Valerie Roach, of Longview, Texas and a number of nieces and nephews residing in Texas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Anders’ memory to the Philipstown Garden Club Endowment Fund will be appreciated. P.O. Box 255, Garrison, NY 10524.

Arrangements are under The direction of The Clinton, Funeral Home, Cold Spring, NY.
