Edward was the son of John and Olive (Alger) Reed. Both his father and paternal grandfather served multiple terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as Congressmen from Massachusetts; his father also serving eight years as Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth. Likewise, members of his mother's family were of some historical note.

Edward married Catherine Howard, the daughter of William and Maria (Willett), at Boston on Nov. 6, 1846. They were the parents of John, born in 1850; William Howard, born in 1852; Catherine H., born in 1854; and Ellen, born in Jan. 1863 and died in Aug. 1864.

A biography appearing in New England Manufacturers and Manufactories, which was published in 1879, stated Edward was an 1841 graduate of Dartmouth College and had studied law before he applied himself to a career with the South Boston Iron Company beginning in 1858. The company had been founded by his maternal uncle Cyrus Alger, who was later succeeded by Edward’s father-in-law William H. Howard as president. Edward became a supervisor of the works and in 1864 was elected a director. In 1875 he was elevated to president of the company, but was forced into retirement a year later due to ill health.

Edward and family resided primarily in Boston's South End. His wife Catherine died in 1889, two years before he himself was taken by complications from Diabetes at his home located at 42 West Newton St.
