US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar and had a law practice in Yarmouth, Barnstable county, Massachusetts. In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses, serving until 1817. In 1821, he was elected to the Seventeenth through Twenty-sixth Congresses as an Anti-Masonic candidate and later a Whig. He chose not to run for reelection in 1840. In 1844, he became the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, serving until 1851.
