Robert L. Brown, 96, of Columbus, passed from this life at 9 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Mr. Brown was born February 13, 1922, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Carl and Nellie Robertson Brown. On November 30, 1941, Mr. Brown married Constance E. Greenlee; she preceded him in death October 23, 1997.
Mr. Brown was graduated from Columbus High School in January 1941.
For 40 years, Mr. Brown was a passenger and freight railroad conductor. He first worked for Pennsylvania Railroad, then Penn-Central Railroad and he retired from Conrail. He was a member of the Indiana Chapter of National Railway Historical Society and was the organizer of a retired railroader’s annual reunion.
Mr. Brown attended the First Christian Church in Columbus.
A sports enthusiast, Mr. Brown enjoyed watching sports on television and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a PAAL football coach in the 1950’s and also coached church league basketball.
Mr. Brown is survived by his children, Robert (Sharon) Brown of Columbus, Jane Sims of Columbus, Greg (Debbie) Brown of Houston, Texas and Randy Brown of Columbus; grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) Brown, Amy (Mike) Bird, Libby (Matt) Pedigo, Todd (Kelly) Sims, Nate Brown and Abigail Brown; great-grandchildren, Chris and Tim Bird, Ashley Brown and Shelby Brown, Nora Pedigo, Riley and Carsen Sims and Adalynn Witt-Brown; brothers, Duke Brown of Indianapolis and Bill Brown of Edinburgh; half-sister, Linda Brown of Columbus; half-brother, Mike (Debbie) Brown of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a grandson, Adam Brown; son-in-law, Roger Sims; and several siblings.
The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with David Burnett officiating.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday.
Mr. Brown will be laid to rest next to his wife at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
