S. L. YOUTH, 11, DIES AFTER FALL ONTO HIGH-TENSION LINE
Chesterfield - An 11-year-old boy hung ensnared in a high-tension wire for more than 10 minutes Monday while a fatal charge of electricity coursed through his body.
James Curtis Beals, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon T. Beals, 2544 Fargo St. (1325 West), was pronounced dead from electrocution Monday at 4:55 p.m. in Salt Lake General Hospital.
Doctors fought for more than a half-hour to save his life.
The boy apparently fell from near the top of a tree onto a utility line which wrapped around his arm Monday about 4 p.m., at 1500 W. Crystal Ave. (2580 South).
Three companions ran for help. More than 10 minutes later, Gordon T. Beals Jr. freed his brother's arm from the wire with a board and the boy fell into the lower part of the tree.
The victim remained in the tree until a Salt Lake County Roads and Bridges "snorkel" truck crew reached him.
Utah Power and Light Co. officials told the investigating officer, Deputy Sheriff Nick Morgan, that the wire carried low voltage but contained 6 1/2 amperes.
Deputy Morgan idenitifed the boy's companions as Robert Terrell, 13, 2546 S. Fargo St.; Randy, 12, and Rocky Card, 11, 2545 S. Fargo St.
The pole carried at least five wires. The boy became ensnared in a line servicing Salt Lake County street lighting.
Utah Power and Light Co. officials said only one of the lines is specifically for county use. The others are used by UP&L for commercial transmission.
Deputy Morgan said there were no witnesses to the fall, but limbs on the tree are so situated that the boy could have struck any of the lines before becoming ensnared in the county wire.
Paul Pratt of the county Roads and Bridges Department said the pole is situated on county property in an area used for utility lines.
Deputy Morgan said the lowest limb on the tree is 6 feet, 10 inches above the ground. He said the boy had to go to "great effort" to climb the tree.
James Curtis Beals, 11, was born Aug. 30, 1952, in Snoqualamie, Wash., a son of Hazel Lamb and Gordon Thomas Beals Sr.
He is survived by a brother and five sisters: Mrs. Vianne Baker, Roy; Lindy Lee, Los Angeles; Gordon Thomas Jr., Hazel, Margaret Ann and Georgiana, all of Salt Lake City; grandmother, Mrs. Patience Myers, Seattle, and a grandfather, Bryce Lamb, Boise, Idaho.
Young Beals was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
