Ansel enlisted in the Army 14 August 1863 at Wakefield, NH to serve with the Union forces during the Civil War. He served in Co. F, 16th Regiment, Maine Infantry as a Private until his discharge, 18 May 1865. He married Ellen S Gatchell in Lincoln, Maine on Christmas Eve 1866. Unfortunately, he was only to live just short of 8 years longer, succumbing at the age of 32 years, 11 months, and 18 days.
