John Brown married Frances Cusick July 29, 1849, in Jefferson Co., Iowa; they were both Hoosier natives. Their first two children, Elizabeth and Sarah Ellen, were born in Iowa. About 1852, the family moved back east to Jefferson Co., Indiana. John Brown served in the Civil War, Co. F, 40th Indiana Infantry.

At the conclusion of John's military service, the family moved to Bartholomew Co., Indiana, where they mainly resided in Rockcreek township. John Brown died in Bartholomew Co., about May, 1885. His military stone was placed in 1891, one of a mass order of markers authorized by Congress for that year.
