John H. Hirstein, 92, of Springfield, passed away at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Memorial Hospice at Heritage Health. John was born on July 24, 1926 in Fairbury, IL, the son of Albert R. and Flora Ward Hirstein. He married Lois M. Taylor on September 15, 1947 in Decatur.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a 1st Class Seaman. He was employed by Pillsbury Mills from 1948-1988 as a Miller. John was a member of Post 32 American Legion, former Fraternal Order of Eagles #437, Life Member of Elks Lodge #158, and Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church where he ushered and was on the finance committee. He enjoyed golf, traveling, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild, Jeri Ann Hirstein; brothers and sister-in-laws, Wallace and Edna; and Ken and Shirley Hirstein; and three sisters, Evelyn Edgecombe, Aurol Hirstein, and Marjorie Voiles.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois Hirstein of Springfield; two sons, Jerry (Karen) Hirstein and Thomas Hirstein, both of Springfield; one daughter, Lisa (Rick) Hirstein-Hughes of Springfield; one grandchild, Angela (John) Hirstein of Springfield; three great-grandchildren, Zackery, Addison, Alexandra; great-great granddaughter, Ava and four brothers, Roger (Del) Hirstein; Richard (Joyce) Hirstein; Dennis (Karen) Hirstein, Robert W. (Paula) Hirstein and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield with an honors ceremony provided by the Elks Lodge #158.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Pastor Julia Melgreen officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors presented by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
