Joseph was a Civil War veteran, the son of Judson and Naomi Smith Brooks of Hawkinsville, Oneida County, New York.
On the 12th August 1862, he enlisted in Co. I 117th New York Infantry at Boonville, N.Y. He stated he was 23 years of age, and a farmer by occupation.
He was married to Sarah Kingsbury, and had a young son Herbert E Brooks, born in 1862.
His father Judson Brooks had served in the War of 1812, in Captain Hubbard's Company N.Y Militia from 22 August 1814 to 16 November 1814.
Joseph also had a number of brothers who served in the Civil War, including William Brooks who also served in Co. I of the 117th regiment, and survived the war.
Joseph was killed by a sharpshooter whilst on duty in the trenches at Petersburg Va. 4th July 1864, and buried nearby.
There is no evidence that his body was sent home, as this would have been an expensive operation, unaffordable for most families.
Almost all of the 117th regiments casualties from Petersburg were later reinterred at the City Point National Cemetery, most in unmarked graves as their identity had been lost over the years.
The Records of Officers and Enlisted Men who died in the War from New York, does list a Joseph Brooks of the 146th NY Infantry who was killed at Petersburg Va. 4 July, 1864, who was buried at Petersburg, this is obviously our soldier, a mistake being made in the records.
Widow Sarah applied for a pension in July 1864 - number 58365, and received one number 37318. She remarried to Edgar Agan in 1870, had a family with him, and died in Nebraska in 1915.Enlisted in Company I, 117th Infantry Regiment New York on 15 August 1862, Killed on 04 July 1864 in Petersburg, VA.

"DEATH: Brooks, Joseph - d. 4 July, killed before Petersburg,VA - Co. I,
