Veteran - Civil War. Enlisted at Decatur, Indiana as a Private in Co. C, 47th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 10 December 1862. Discharged in Louisiana on 17 October 1863 due to deteriorating physical condition caused by age. Participated in Battle at Champion Hill, Mississippi. Three sons, Jasper, Henry, and Simeon, also served during the Civil War with Henry being killed at Champion Hills.
