Harrison Bates, one of the pioneer men of Delaware county, passed away at his home in this city Friday, August 3rd, 1917, his death being due to the infirmaties of years.
Funeral services were held in the home Saturday afternoon and interment made in Oakland cemetery. Rev. W. J. Suckow had charge of the services.
Mr. Bates was born in Augusta, Maine, May 16th, 1830. In 1854 he was united in marriage with Rachel Davis, and shortly after their marriage they came to Delhi, Iowa, where they lived for many years. Mr. Bates was for years engaged in the blacksmithing business and machine repairing. Later they came to Manchester, where for years he pursued his line of work. For nearly forty years Mr. Bates lived in the home where he passed away last week. Mrs. Bates passed away August 5th, 1915. He is survived by his adopted daughter, Mrs. Will Barnes.
