Mrs. H. L. Bates, one of the pioneer women of Manchester, passed away at her home in this city on Thursday afternoon, August 5th, 1915, at the age of 86 years. Funeral services were held from the home of Saturday afternoon. On account of the absence of Rev. W. J. Suckow, pastor of the Congregational church, Rev. J. Frank Moore, now of Waterloo, came Saturday, morning to conduct the services. Interment was made in Oakland cemetery.
Rachel Davis was born near Syracuse, New York, in 1819. She was united in marriage with Harrison Bates in 1854, and shortly after their marriage they came to Delhi, where they resided for a time. Later they came to Manchester, where they resided continuously since 1857.
Mrs. Bates was a charter member of the First Congregational church of this city, and was a devout Christian woman. Until prevented by the infirmities incident to her age. Mrs. Bates was a constant attendant upon the services of the church she assisted in organizing.
Mrs. Bates is survived by her aged husband; and Mrs. Will Barnes her adopted daughter, and who cared for Mrs. Bates during her declining years.
The death of Mrs. Bates is deeply regretted by many of the older residents of Manchester, and to the bereaved husband is extended the heartfelt sympathy.
