Our wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend Kent Jolley Abel, age 86, passed away October 13, 2018. Kent was born November 6, 1931 in American Fork, Utah. He was the youngest of five children born to George Edward and Moneta Jolley Abel.

Kent married his lifelong companion Reta Powers on November 3, 1952. Kent and Reta enjoyed over 65 years of marriage. Kent was a wonderful and loving husband who truly exemplified the commitment of marriage, especially in these last years caring for his loving wife Reta, as she has battled dementia.

Kent attended BYU where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Master’s Degree in Education. Kent enjoyed a long and productive career in Education. He was a well-loved teacher at Orem High School, where he taught business and office practice classes. His teaching and leadership abilities led him to become the Assistant Superintendent of Alpine School District. After working for Alpine School District for 25 years, Kent moved to Illinois where he worked as an Assistant Superintendent of Business Services until his retirement in 1992. He particularly cherished the years he spent in Illinois.

Kent dedicated many years of service to Business and Retired Teacher’s Associations during his career and post-retirement. This allowed him to travel often, speaking at many national conventions. He made many life-long friends in his association work. He was elected to the Association of School Business Officials, where he was elected President in 1979. He was President of the Utah Retired Teachers Association, and was later Executive Director. He served on the Board of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for Utah, for 17 years. Kent also worked with legislation to promote teacher benefits.

Kent enjoyed keeping busy by working in his office, watching sports, listening to his “elevator music”, tending to his beautiful koi pond, shopping at Costco, and getting together often with his family and friends. He enjoyed golfing and boating in his earlier years. Kent also loved technology. He always had the latest gadget, the newest version of any technology device. Of all his accomplishments, Kent was most proud of his family. He had a special relationship with his grandchildren, and encouraged them to do well in whatever they chose to do. There are many fond memories of time spent with his family making his famous sugar cookies, caramels, and pies. He will be greatly missed.

Kent is survived by his loving companion Reta; three children, Jill Workman, Nancy (Randy) Downing, Kathy (David) Miller, all of Utah.

He was also survived by his 8 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life event honoring Kent will be held at the Alpine Country Club, 5000 West Alpine Country Club Lane, Highland, Ut. Friday, October 19th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Friends and family are warmly invited to attend the Open House
