Sharon was born January 3, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Byron Reed and Ethel Taylor MacKay. She married Richard D. Thurgood in May 1967 in Sandy,
Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in July 1976.
She graduated from South High School and had two degrees from the University of Utah, B.S. and M.S.W. She loved learning which brought to her many unanswered questions. Her great willingness and desire to help all whom she knew and come to know made her very successful as a worker with the division of Family Services. After retiring from employment to devote all her efforts to being a very gracious mother and wife, she was helpful to the community also by supporting the development of the state volunteer program.
Sharon is survived by her mother, Ethel T. MacKay, Sandy, Utah; two brothers, Michael T. MacKay, Sandy, Utah and Timothy T. MacKay, New York, New York; her husband, Richard D. Thurgood, Sandy, Utah; her two children, Christina Lynne Carlson, Salt Lake City and Richard Ian Thurgood, Sandy, Utah; four stepchildren, Jan Carol Christenbury Hickory, North Carolina; Lynda Lu Thurgood Polson, Montana; Kari Lu Thurgood, Welsville, Utah and Scott R. Thurgood, Seattle, Washington; also nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by her father.
