Thelma LaRue Birkeland St. George, UT Our dear Mom, Grandma, Great-grandmother, Great-great-grand-mother, Sister, Aunt and Friend

Thelma LaRue Birkeland, passed from this mortal existence, to her beloved family on June 15, 2009. Thelma was born in Coalville, Utah, on 17 January 1914, to Willard M. Timmons and Clara May Timmons. Her parents were later divorced and Clara married George W. Brown. Thelma was sealed to them in the St. George LDS Temple 26 September 1977.

She married Harold A. Birkeland, 8 March 1935 and later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple 27 September 1977. To this union one son was born, Harold Lee Birkeland. Thelma was the second of seven brothers and sisters. The first, Roy Timmons, deceased, lived in St. George area.

Five of her siblings died at child birth. Her sole surviving sister, Bernice Saddler lived in Salt Lake City, UT. She was schooled in Coalville and later in Salt Lake. She attended Granite High School.

After her marriage to Harold she helped with the house hold budget working at J.C. Penney's in Salt Lake for 27 years.

Thelma served in several capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Always in good spirits and with a big smile. She was liked by all who knew her. She and her husband traveled to many places in their senior years.

A wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Great-great-grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend, she is survived by her son Harold (Pat) Birkeland; three grandchildren: Pam (Paul) Paulsen, West Jordan; Mark Birkeland of St. George; and Scott Birkeland of Taylorsville; seven great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchild-ren; her sister Bernice Saddler and many loving nieces and nephews. Our thanks to the members of Zions Way Hospice.

A viewing and funeral services will be held Thursday, June 18, 2009, at 2 p.m., at the Snow Canyon LDS 13th Ward Chapel, 1610 N. Dixie Downs Rd., St. George, UT.

A visitation will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, UT. Arrangements under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221.
