The 5th child of Hanss Peter jr. and Catharina, Eberhard Buecklin was born in Weil on 15 Dec 1710. He lost his father while a toddler of 1 year and 4 months.
His mother, Catharina, remarried about a year later, to a dispatch rider or landbote, named Carle Matthes. Catharina died 15 May 1749, followed by Carle about 6 months later. Young Eberhard started working for Joachim Hoss. Joachim earned his living as a kramer, or travelling merchant or pedlar of goods.
Eberhard would marry Margaretha, daughter of Joachim Hoss and his wife Anna Barbara Burkhardt on 3 Nov 1739 in Weil. Margaretha had been born 20 Feb 1720 in Weil.

The "old Showdy farm", later known as the Barkley farm, can be located on a 1767 map of the Rensselaer manor section of Albany Co., just east of Altamont, on the north side of the Great Western Road.
