Thelma Leona Elliott, 95, passed away on Sept. 9, 2018. She was born Feb. 14, 1923, the eldest daughter of Frank and Mabel VanHorn, Medford, IN.
Thelma liked to tell the story that as a young girl her mother would wave a kerchief to stop the train to ride into town. That was small town living. She attended Center School. During World War II, Thelma worked at Durham Manufacturing, making 45 artillery shells. Her early married life was spent in Seattle, Washington; Texas; and Bell Gardens, California. Eventually they settled back in Muncie in the 1960's. That was when Thelma started working at Ball State University in housekeeping, then in dining, until retiring as a breakfast cook at LaFollette in 1985. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, traveling, games, cooking, crocheting, gardening and word search puzzles.
Thelma is survived by daughters, Sally and Ila; daughter-in-law, Josie; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Sarah Richards.
Thelma was preceded in death by husbands, Evert Verneman and Guss Elliott; and good friends, Tom Huber and David Smith. She was preceded in death by her children, Rose Verneman, Evert Verneman and her siblings, Homer VanHorn and Ila Jones.
The family wishes to thank Lifestreat Services; Troy with At Home Specialized Senior Car; along with the special caregivers over the last 10 years, Bridget and Sandy, who made it possible to Thelma to stay at home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, Muncie, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow the service at Elm Ridge Memorial Park.
