DeForest Karpp Jr. of Glennie, age 87, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital with his loving family at his side.
He was born May 9, 1926 in North Canton, Ohio to the late DeForest and Sylivia Karpp. DeForest Jr. enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served during World War II. He was a plank owner aboard the USS Hancock CV-19. He also felt very proud of the American flag and that he was able to serve for the freedom of our country.
He was the first fire chief for the Curtis Township Fire Department for many years. As chief he purchased the first new pumper fire truck for the department. He was invaluable in bringing the first resuscitator response team to Curtis Township.
He owned a local business in the Glennie area for over 50 years. It was the first full service gas station, auto repair, and wrecker service in the area. He also worked for International truck as a sales and service dealer, for Oliver farm machinery, and retired from True Value hardware. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Hale and a member of Lott Baptist Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Leora; two sons and their wives; two granddaughters; five great grandchildren, ; brother, Dale Karpp; sister, Kimmie (Mike) Peters; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Adams and DeErla Kirkwood; and grandson, Robbie LaPointe.
Private cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions suggested to Lott Baptist Church Building Fund, 4257 State St. in Glennie. Arrangements are handled by the Hale chapel of Buresh Funeral Home, 121 S.
