Born in Spartanburg, SC, on September 26, 1944, son of the late Marion William Mathis and Clara Lucille Hall Mathis Abernathy.
A United States Air Force Veteran having served during the Vietnam War; a member of Holston Creek Baptist Church and a retired employee of Garrett & Garrett Contracting.
Survived by two daughters, Angela Mathis Wyke (Ricky) of Boiling Springs; Whitney Mathis of Inman; stepdaughter, Erica Gary of Inman; four grandchildren, Jennifer Kennedy. Allison Winkler (Mark), Madison Griffin, Tyler Twitty-Hill; two great-grandchildren, Hayden Kennedy and Kinsley Winkler; brother-in-law, Clyde Ledford of West Columbia; four nephews, Brian Ledford of Powdersville, Dale Ledford of Kinard, Chris Ledford of Anderson, Tony Humphries of Spartanburg; two nieces, Lisa Dasta of Columbia and Tania Humphries of Greer.
In addition to his parents, predeceased by two sisters, Carolyn Ledford and Peggy Jean Mathis Humphries.
Visitation was held from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., Monday, September 10, 2018, at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman, SC.
Memorial Service followed at 3:00 PM, at Seawright Funeral Chapel, conducted by Dr. Reggie Parker. Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
