Nolie was born and raised in Joplin, Triangle Virginia to Harvey and Kathleen (Kerlin) Abel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Tina, daughters Bonnie Ramey husband Mike, Kelly Moch husband Ira, and son Tim, wife Tiffany. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Michael Ramey Jr, Matthew Owen Ramey, Kandice Wilson husband Kyle, Tyler Abel, Laura Moch, Brittany Abel, and Kaylee Abel, 5 great-grandchildren Cameron Grace Ramey, Mikayla Ann Ramey, Leelan Greene , Jaxson Greene , and Alara Abel. Nolie is preceded in death by his parents; Harvey Nolen Abel and Mary Kathleen (Kerlin) Abel, and his brother Richard “Tex” Abel.
Nolie graduated from Gar-Field High School in 1958 where he was an outstanding athlete. He participated in baseball, football, and basketball. He received several awards for athletics including the 1957 Journal Messenger Most Valuable Player Trophy and was chosen Garfield High School‘s best all-around athlete for 1958. He was in the G-F Letterman‘s Club, Key Club, Treasurer of the Senior Class, Fire Chief for G-F Fire Department, and an Honor Roll Student.
After finishing school Nolie became a certified welder and worked at Fruit Growers Express Company in Alexandria Virginia. While working there he was drafted into the Army. After serving his country he returned to Fruit Growers where he completed 21 years of service. After Fruit Growers closed business In Alexandria he started his own landscaping business. He began working for Prince William Park Authority in 1989 until leaving due to health issues in 2016. There he enjoyed 27 years as a Park Ranger meeting people all over the county and most of all loved going to the county schools to share about nature within the parks. He always received tons of thank you letters from the children, which he loved reading.
Nolie coached baseball for Dumfries Little League as well as Babe Ruth baseball in Quantico. He was always hard on his ballplayers but they loved him. Nolie had no problem telling their parents to go home if they didn’t like his coaching and the way he trained his players they could come back and get them when they were done. Many of his players have kept up with him over the years.
He was a people person who loved to talk and never met a stranger. Most of all he loved his family. His grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of his life.
