US Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 11th Secretary of Energy under President George W. Bush from January 31, 2005 to January 20, 2009. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering in 1961 and four years later, earned his ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later worked in both the educational and financial worlds before joining Fidelity Venture Associates, a division of Fidelity Investments. In 1983, he became the president and chief operating officer of Fidelity Investments and a director of the Fidelity Group of Mutual Funds. Four years later, he joined Cabot Corporation, a Boston-based Fortune 300 company with global business activities in specialty chemicals and materials, where he served as Chairman, CEO, and a Director. In 2001, he joined the administration of President George W. Bush first as Deputy Secretary of Commerce and then later as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. On December 10, 2004, he was picked by President Bush to be Secretary of Energy and was confirmed unanimously by the Senate in January of 2005. He served in this office for the next four years before leaving when Barack Obama became president. During his career, he also served as a director of many publicly-owned corporations.
