Actress. She was best known for her Tony Award-winning performance in the Broadway play "The Elephant Man" in 1979. She was also known for her role as 'Gwendolyn Pigeon' on the Broadway, film, and television versions of Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" during the 1960s and early 1970s. Born Carole Augusta Shelley, she began her acting career on both British television and film before coming to America in the mid 1960s. She made her Broadway debut in 1965 in Neil Simon's play "The Odd Couple where she played the character 'Gwendolyn Pigeon.' She would go on to play the same role in both the film version in 1968 and the television series in 1970. She continued on and off Broadway during her career in such productions as "The Elephant Man," "Absurd Person Singular," "Twelve Dreams," "Stepping Out," and "Wicked." She earned the Tony Award for her memorable performance in "The Elephant Man" in 1979. She also appeared in various films during her career such as "The Boston Strangler" (1968), "Quiz Show" (1994), "Jungle 2 Jungle" (1997), and "Bewitched" (2005). Besides "The Odd Couple," she made numerous appearances in television during her career with such credits as "All My Children," "Spenser: For Hire," "The Cosby Show," "Frasier," and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." During her career, she also did voice work for the Disney animated films "The Aristocats" (1970) and "Robin Hood" (1973). She passed away of cancer.
