“Gilbert M. Brooks, who was born to Ferd C. and Lena Mikesell Brooks, Feb. 12, 1936, in Carroll County's Union Township, died May 9, 2012.
“After graduation from Carrollton High School in 1954, he moved to Cleveland where he graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Music and later became its dean and founder of its Choral Department. He conducted and recorded concerts that were broadcast nationally and internationally.
“He was director of music for many years at Grace Lutheran Church in Cleveland Heights, founding director of Cleveland's Harvard School of Music, which was associated with The Cleveland Music School Settlement, producer of Lake Erie Opera Theatre which performed at Severance Hall with The Cleveland Orchestra, founder of Heights Interfaith Council which consists of churches and temples from Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and University Heights, and was vice president of University Circle, Incorporated, for community outreach and education programs. He served as a consultant for many years for the National Endowment for the Arts and Ohio Arts Council.
“After retirement, he returned to live in his hometown of Carrollton, OH.
“He is survived by his life partner of 20 years, Virginia B. Abbott; his children, Carolyn (Darren) Gura of Chardon, Laura of South Euclid, and John of Fishers, IN; a brother, Joseph (Nancy) of Midford, OH; and three grandchildren.
“He was preceded in death by a sister, Miriam.
“A memorial service was held May 12 at Carrollton Church of Christ, Christian Disciples. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Jewett. Memorial donations may be made to institutions and organizations of your choice.”
