At age 21, Thomas enlisted, on 24 August 1861, into the Confederate Army as a Private in Co. K of the 24th Infantry Regiment of Georgia, known as the "McMillan Guards." He was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 2 July 1863 and released at Elmira, New York on 16 June 1865.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Leonard on 31 Dec 1867 in White Co., GA. They had four children.
Thomas and Sarah moved their family to Baxter County, Arkansas in 1883 from White County, Georgia, and settled in Mountain Home.
Thomas was prominent in community work and work of the Methodist Church.
