Garvin Slemmons, 101, passed away Thursday evening, August 15, 1985 in the Northfield Villa in Gering.
He was born August 4, 1884 in Dunbar, the son of Matthew and Frances Taylor Slemmons and grew up on various farms on Oklahoma, Iowa and Colorado before the family moved to Mitchell and homesteaded northeast of Mitchell. He became associated with Carr-Trumbull Lumber Company on May 8, 1908 and shortly therafter became manager of the Mitchell yard and served in that capacity until 1959. He continued to go to the office everyday until 1980 when he became physically unable to do so.
He married Fern Borland on June 30, 1913 and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1952 as did an infant daughter Donzell in 1916.
In 1953, he married Helen McNair.
Garvin was a charter member of the Federated Churches of Mitchell, where he sang in the choir for many years, a sixty year member and Past Master of Mitchell Masonic Lodge #263, a past Patron of Sunflower Chapter O.E.S., past associate guardian of Jobs Daughters, a former member of the Mitchell City Council and the Mitchell Cemetery Board, and was also active and involved in anything that worked for the betterment of that community.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, a son Robert of Topeka, Kansas, a daughter Mrs. G. U. (Kay) Dineen of Denver, Colorado, a step-son James L. Mcnair of Littleton, Colorado, a step-daughter Lyn Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The body was taken to Cheyenne for cremation.
A memorial service was held Mondayat 10 a.m. in the Federated Church in Mitchell with Revs. Jack Winland, Carlyle Smith and Floyd Sauer officiating. Inurment will be in the Mitchell Cemetery with Jones Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established to the Federated Church in Mitchell and the Northfield Villa Medical Center in Gering.
