Cadillac – Walter LeRoy Stump died peacefully at Mercy Hospital on January 27, 2012 following extended illnesses. At the age of 84 he has gone with great anticipation to be with his Lord and those special ones who have gone before.

Born May 30, 1927 in Elkhart County, In. to Russell and Marice (Teeter) Stump, "Bud" as he was known in his family was the third of six children growing up in Goshen, Indiana. Graduating from Goshen High School in 1945 he joined the US Navy during the waning days of WW II. He served for one and a half years and was a proud plank-holder on the then new aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge. He began attending college (Bethel College, South Bend, IN) immediately afterwards.

On Dec 7, 1947 he married Evelyn Jean Lechlightner who remained his wife for 61 years until her death on May 29, 2009.

On November 12, 2011 Walter married Alma Truman who brightened his life so much. With so many years behind them the joy and comfort they brought each other was truly God-sent.

After graduation and ordination Walter served as a pastor in the United Missionary Church. First in Lincoln, Nebraska then Trenton, Iowa he inspired and built growing congregations as an active young minister. Moving his family to the Lansing area in 1959 Walter renewed his educational journey attending Michigan State University completing both his Masters and Doctorate (1967) degrees in Counseling Psychology. During this time he also served as pastor of Chapel Hill UMC in Haslett. After completing this phase of his education Walter again moved the family to Kalamazoo (until 1972) then Allegan (until 1986). During these years he served as Director of the Kalamazoo Consultation Center then as Clinical Consultant and Therapist at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Walter and Jean moved to the Cadillac area in 1986 coinciding with the birth of their grandsons here.

Walter worked with a private counseling service in the area before serving the mental health unit at Mercy Hospital until his retirement.

He is fondly remembered by many people he worked with for his calm demeanor and steady touch. After retirement he enjoyed his extended family (known to all as Uncle Bud) and his grandsons.

He is survived by his son Michael (Sue) of Cadillac; grandsons Michael of Milwaukee, WI And Matthew of Cadillac along with his beloved Alma Truman of Cadillac; brothers Russell (Lowell) and Dan (Faye) both of Albuquerque, NM; and sisters Eloise Holdeman (Merle) of IL and Dorothy Prout (Earl) of Bloomington, IN; and special sister-in-law Jeanne Garber (Jerry) as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him.
