Robert is the son of George and Phoebe (Fersiby JERDAN) JAMES. Robert was born in Chatham Co., NC. Roberts' parents both died in Chatham County. George in 1846 and his mother, Phoebe, in 1858. George was married to Frances GREGORY and to this union were born four daughters and two sons, William and Edmund. Robert was the fourth son born to George and Phoebe. Other children to this union are: Matthew McCarey, Henry, Jeremiah "Jerry", (Robert, already mentioned), and James.

Robert married Mary nee HAMBY, daughter of Stephen R. Hamby and Sarah "Sally" nee GRIFFITH Hamby, in 1840 in Washington Co., AR (Marriage record cannot be located after a paid search in AR.). To this union were born these known children: Stephen "Steve", William Henry, Nancy Ann Gentry, Jasper "Jap" Nuation, James "Jim" Newton, Mary G., Fanny Ann, Helen Louise Denzia, Alice Victoria and Edward Wallace Caviness.

There are many variations of the spelling of Caviness in this family. The original spelling was Cabaniss when the family migrated from France to America in 1699 to Jamestown, VA. This branch of the family began to use Caveness, Caviness, Cavness and Cavaness as they migrated to North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas and on to Texas.
