Catherine "Katie" Volpe was born Giuseppa Vincenza Caterina Volpe in San Giovanni di Stella Cilento, Salerno, Italy, 8 February 1886, to Giovanni Volpe, age 30, landowner, and Elena Lippi, age 28. She was the oldest of 8 children. When she was about 16 years old, the family sailed to America aboard the S.S. Roma, arriving in New York City 28 July 1903. They traveled on to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to meet with Giovanni's brother, Luigi, who lived at 1008 South 9th Street. Caterina eventually worked as a tailoress before marriage.

She married Nicola Itri on 20 October 1910 in Philadelphia. They had 5 children, Mary, Helen, Joseph, John and Rita. She became a U.S. citizen at the same time as her husband in 1917. When the family moved to 2000 21st Street sometime between 1917 and 1920, Katie opened a "candy store" in the front part of the building that served as their family dwelling as well as her husband's barbershop. They lived there until Nicola retired and then moved to Yeadon, Pennsylvania. She was living with her daughter, Rita, at the time of her death, 16 January 1979.
