"Nick" was born Raffaele Nicola Angelo Itri in Stella Cilento, Salerno, Italy on 22 May 1884 to Giuseppe Itri, age 62, landowner, and Maria Cristina Siano, age 30 (from Eredita, Ogliastro Cilento, Salerno, Italy). He was number five of seven children and the first born son. Nicola's mother died when he was a young child and his father, Giuseppe, died 17 April 1901, a month before Nicola turned 17. The month after his father's death, Nicola sailed to America aboard the S.S. Britannia, arriving in New York City on 17 June 1901 at 4:20 p.m. The ship's manifest showed that he was headed for Philadelphia, although he had no one there waiting for him. He would travel back to Italy at least one more time, returning to America in 1906 with two of his sisters, Nicolina and Angela, in June of that year. All four of his older sisters came to America and were married here, though one, Giovanna, returned to live in Italy after the birth of two children.

Somewhere along the line Nicola learned the barber trade, for by the time he filled out his application for a marriage license in 1910, he listed barber as his occupation. He married Caterina Volpe, a tailoress, from San Giovanni di Stella Cilento, on 20 October 1910.

Nicola and Caterina's first daughter, Mary, was born at their residence, 1175 So. 9th St. Philadelphia, in September 1911. Their second daughter, Helen, was born at the same address in August 1912. By the time Joseph was born in January 1914, the family had moved to 737 Reed St. John came along in June 1915 and Nicola became a naturalized U.S. citizen in May 1917, at which point the family was living at 1319 Reed St. Sometime before 1920 the family moved to their new residence with barbershop included at 2000 So. 21st St. They were living there when their last child, Rita, was born in August 1921. They remained in that location until Nicola's retirement.

In September 1947 he purchased a home in Yeadon, Pennsylvania at 817 Bullock Avenue, where he and his wife and daughter, Helen, lived until his death from a heart attack on 10 February 1955.
