Dead Several Weeks
The body of a man believed to be James Pierce, who formerly worked as a porter at Benjamin Uhl’s saloon, 202 South Illinois street, was found late Saturday afternoon in a vacant room on the second floor of the Bretz block, Illinois and Georgia streets. The body was badly decomposed and it was the opinion of Dr. Paul Robinson, deputy coroner, that the man had been dead for several weeks.
The body was found by Uhl and a bartender who had gone to the second floor of the building in search of a porter who had disappeared from the saloon earlier in the day. Uhl said Pierce was addicted to the use of drugs and liquor and had not been seen for several weeks. The county undertaker took charge of the body and an effort is being made to find Pierce’s relatives.
