RUSSELL, Shirley R. Shirley R. Russell, 87, of Tequesta, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at Good Samaritan Medical Center, due from complications of liver disease. After graduation from St. Luke's Nursing School in Cedar Rapids, IA, she worked for Baylor University and subsequently moved on to Denver, CO, where she met her husband, the Honorable Otis Butler Russell, Jr. They eventually made their home in West Palm Beach where she worked at Good Samaritan Hospital as a surgical nurse for 38 years retiring in 1996. She was a long time member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses of the Palm Beaches (AORN) serving in many capacities including President, and was named Member of the Year in 1984. She subsequently worked at the North County Surgery Center in Palm Beach Gardens. Shirley gave freely to help others including volunteering at Our Sister's Place in Tequesta as well as the Jupiter Medical Center Thrift Shop in Jupiter. Shirley was a lover of sports, specifically baseball, and loved to play golf. She was an avid gardener and an avid card player including bridge. Born in Edgewood, IA, she spent summers there after her retirement. She was a member of the Edgewood Trinity United Church and a Red Hatter there, as well. She spent many hours volunteering at the thrift shop in Manchester, IA, just as in Palm Beach County. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Judge Otis Butler Russell, Jr., and is survived by her children, Constance L. (Kenneth) Kittrell of Albany, GA, Frederick A. (Maria) of Lake Worth, Nancy A. Russell and husband, Victor of West Palm Beach, Thomas B. Russell of Tequesta; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and various nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death was her sister, Barbara; her parents; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Shirley was a lover of life and friends. She took care of all she knew and loved. A Memorial service will be held at 1:00PM Monday, January 15, 2018, at NORTHWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 5608 Broadway, West Palm Beach, with Rev. Gay Robertson of Trinity United Methodist Church of Palm Beach Gardens officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to your family charity would be appreciated.
