Elizabeth Peek (1760/65 - 1849/50)

ELIZABETH PEEK, The eldest daughter of Thomas and Lettice (Moseley) Peake, was born between 1760-1765 in Prince William County, Virginia, and died 1849/50 in Boone County, Kentucky (Wills E: 395). While a young girl she accompanied her family in their westward migration to that part of the West Augusta District that later becme Washington County, Pennsylania. Sometime before 1787, when her first child was born, Elizabeth was married to John Adams. He may be the John Adams named on the Donegal Township, Washington County tax list of 1785. In 1792 most of the Peake clan began the family migration down the Ohio River to the Cincinnati area. Elizabeth and John Adams joined this relocation then or shortly thereafter. In 1798 John built a cabin (photo) at what is now Covington, Kentucky. A Great Granddaughter, Maude Thompson, described it: I remember the old log cabin, a 6-room, and mother once told me that it was her grandfathers. The cabin was located at 9th and Banklick streets. (DeCoursey, 1972 p. 2). In 1806 John Adams met with an untimely death. A granddaughter, Lucretia "Creacy" Adams, stated "that he was killed at a barn raising on the site of present Cincinnati by having a log roll over him" (DeCoursey, p.2) On 10 January 1807 the Boone County court appointed Joseph Case guardian of Matthew, Robert and John Adams, "infant orphans of John Adams Deceased." (Orders, 1799-1815). Elizabeth never remarried, raising her children alone. However she always remained close to her brother Presley. On 4 May 1812 Presley sold to Elizabeth 50 acres on Gunpowder Creek, adjoining property, for £ 50 (Deeds C:35). In her later years Elizabeth lived with her son John C. Adams, being shown in his household in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. She died in late 1849 or early 1850, and in May 1850 an inventory of her estate was filed (Wills E: 395). On 5 April 1853 Robert Adams was listed as administrator of her estate on the final settlement (Wills F: 310).
