Josephus was born in an area that was "claimed" by OH & MI, so without moving, he was in OH one day, MI the next, then back to OH--thus the confusion abt. his b. place.
Josephus Edward Baird, b. 17 Dec 1828 Monroe Co., MI and was the 2nd child of Milton & Lydia (Bruce) Baird. Charles, the 3rd son was also born in Monroe Co., MI. The family moved back to Middleton Twp., Wood Co., OH, where they lived near the Maumee River Basin in the northwestern part of Wood Co. This settlement was later named Miltonville, in the honor of his father. However, Milton Baird, with his family chose to leave Miltonville. In 1852, they settled on a 120 acre farm located in section 8, in the northern part of Milford Twp., LaGrange Co., IN. It was in this area that Josephus and his five brothers and four sisters grew up. His mother Lydia, at age 72 years, d. 02 Dec 1889. They are bur. Woodruff Memorial Gardens, Johnson Twp., LaGrange Co., IN. On 28 Feb 1864 LaGrange Co., IN, Josephus md. Olive L. Bacon. Olive was the dau. of Chester & Mary Bacon. Her family came from Chenango Co., NY. She had a sis. Sarah Bacon, who md. Edward High of Ashley, IN, and a bro. Joseph Bacon who md. Lucina Fuller, and moved to Los Angeles, CA. Soon after Josephus & Olive's marriage, the couple ventured westward reaching the area of Maxwell, IA. They were engaged in farming and raising stock. They had six children: Dora, George, Walter, Mary, Edward and Alfred. I don't know how long aft. the birth of Alfred that Olive passed away. I haven't been able to obtain any info of her death date or of her bur. place, but I assume she was bur. near Maxwell, IA. It was said Josephus tried but was unable to care for his children on a daily basis and still provide a living for his family, and so he decided to send his four youngest children, by train, to live with their Aunt Sarah "Sade" (Bacon) & Uncle Ed High. Josephus and his two older childre n, Dora and George, remained living at their homeplace near Maxwell, IA. When Josephus reached a retirement age, he came back to IN, to visit his children, as they were all md. at the time, he would make periodic visits with each and everyone. He returned to IA several times travelling by train. While staying with his son, Edward and wife Emma, at their rural home, north of Waterloo, IN, Josephus suffered a stroke, leaving him paralyzed. He d. at 7 a.m. 16 Oct 1927, at the age of 89 years. The C. J. Swank Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Bur. was made at the South Milford Cem., LaGrange Co., IN. There is no headstone to mark his grave, but it was told that his bur. plot is located beside his youngest son Alfred Baird. Note from Clara Mae (Baird) High.
