Rebecca Eisenbise was probably born on May 21, 1837 in Miami County, Ohio. Her mother was Polly Brown, age unknown. Her father was Hessen (German) immigrant Peter Eisenbise, age 32. Rebecca had five younger siblings, and would have three brothers younger than her.

We think Polly died in about 1847 in Ohio when Rebecca was about 10 years old. Peter then moved the nine motherless children to Indiana where he was remarried in Elkhart County within the year to Julia Ann Elder, the widow of Elisha Cook and James Rutan.

Rebecca's reconfigured family probably next moved from Indiana to Carroll County, Illinois sometime before March 1854 where Rebecca's eldest brother, George, and their step-sister, Mary Cook, had a child together at Freedom Township.

Rebecca grew up on the family farm in Freedom Township near the now defunct town of Cherry Grove.

Rebecca passed away on August 2, 1861 when she was just 24, apparently never having married nor left home.

Rebecca's remains were returned to the earth at Arnold's Grove Cemetery, in keeping with her family's deep connection to the Dunkard (German Baptist Brethren) community in that area. (Brethren church historians have said that her stepmother, Julia Ann, "may be considered one of the great women of the Church of the Brethren in Northern Illinois.")

Rebecca's father, step-mother, and many other family members were later buried nearby at Arnold's Grove.
