NORTH SMITHFIELD - Newton Y. Whipple, 76, of North Smithfield, passed away on January 8, 2017, at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. He was the husband of the late Sandra (Hart) Whipple. Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Lester E. and Ruth (Young) Whipple.
Newton spread joy to the community as Santa Claus for over forty years. He was a warm hearted person who could make friends with anyone. Newton was a lifelong member of Slatersville Congregational Church, a member of the Nature Lovers camping group, and on the Board of Directors at Thundermist. He also had a love for painting.
Newton is survived by two children, Scott Whipple and his husband Jeffrey Bourque of Shirley, MA, and Debra Malcolm and her husband Sean of North Smithfield; two brothers, Edward Whipple of North Smithfield, and Warren Whipple of West Virginia; a sister, Carol Norris of Colorado; as well as his companion of twenty-three years, Susanne Beecy of North Smithfield. He also leaves twelve grandchildren, James and Derek Malcolm, Paul and Ben Bourque, Noah Lynch, Bill, Michael, Colin, Keegan, Joshua, Elizabeth and Allie Beecy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lester Whipple, Jr.
His funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 10 AM in the Slatersville Congregational Church, 25 Greene Street, North Smithfield, RI. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Smithfield Road, North Smithfield. Calling hours will be held, Friday from 4 - 8 PM in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sandra H. Whipple Memorial Scholarship Fund, 878 Black Plain Rd. North Smithfield, RI 02896.
