Lester E. Whipple Sr., 85, of 3 Evergreen Drive, a self-employed carpenter before retiring in 1987, died yesterday in Landmark Medical Center-Woonsocket Unit. He was the husband of Ruth (Young) Whipple.

Born in Manville, he was a son of the late Walter and Annie (Follett) Whipple.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Lester E. Whipple Jr. and Newton Y. Whipple, both of North Smithfield, Edward A. Whipple of Blackstone, Mass., and Warren W. Whipple of Glendale, Ariz.; a daughter, Carol R. Norris of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Gladys Follett of Wakefield and Thelma Nolan of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 S. Main St., Woonsocket, with burial in Union Cemetery, North Smithfield.
