The Deadly Pistol

Tuesday morning news was brought to town of the killing of R. M. Hargis by Johnnie Blain on Monday night between 1 and 2 o'clock while attending a dance on Carr's creek about three miles from town. The dance was given at the residence of Mr. William Taylor, who lives on what is known as the old Dr. Blue place now owned by Henry Hasserrodt. The facts of the killing are not at all............inquest and at the examining trial. The most friendly relations had existed between the two boys up to the time of the killing, and they visited the dance only for the purpose of having a good time, as evidenced by the fact that they made up a purse to send and get whisky with, and both of them had been drinking though not to excess. Mr. Lee Logan had been playing the fiddle for the dancers and it seems Mr. Hargis placed his fingers over the strings against which Mr. Blain remonstrated. From the evidence this seems to be the starting of the difficulty, which was renewed when they went out in the yard by some other remarks when Hargis drew his pistol and Blain told him to "cut loose," which was followed by a shot from Hargis and responded to by one from Blain. They were in front of the door of the house and within a few feet of each other. They retreated around the east side of the house firing, on the east side of which Hargis fell. One shot struck Mr. Hargis right hand breaking his finger and passing through the palm, shattering the handle of his pistol. Another shot entered his body just above his left hip. There were four or five shots fired. Mr. Hargis only lived a few minutes after the shooting. Mr. Blaine surrendered to the officers Tuesday, and had an examining trial Wednesday evening before County Judge Abernethy.

Mr. Hargis was buried Tuesday evening in the Public cemetery. Mr. Blains's bond was fixed at $500 which was given
