◙ ◙ ◙ ◙

Abraham was the first-born child of Christian H. Emmert and Mary E. (Long) Emmert. The baby would live less than three months.

Mary was the daughter of Christian and Susanna (Hershey) Long. Mary was born on July 18, 1835 in Pennsylvania, probably in Huntingdon County of that great commonwealth. Her parents were both native Pennsylvanians as well.

Abraham's father, Christian Emmert, was born on August 15, 1829 in Washington County, Maryland, to Joseph B. Emmert and Elizabeth (Hershey) Emmert. Christian's family emigrated to Carroll County during the 1840s where Christian's uncle, Pastor David Emmert, had been a principal founder of the town of Mount Carroll.

Mary's family emigrated to Illinois in about 1852. Christian Long attended the Brethren Annual Meeting of 1853 at Beaver Dam, Maryland, where he reported so enthusiastically about his year on the Illinois prairie that others in attendance were moved to relocate to Carroll County as well. See John Heckman and J. E. Miller, "Brethren In Northern Illinois and Wisconsin" at 41-42 (Elgin, Ill.: 1941).

Christian and Mary were married on December 15, 1853 in Carroll County, Illinois. Abraham was born on January 25, 1855 in Freedom Township. However, Abrahan died just two months later.

Christian and Mary buried Abraham at the Arnold's Grove Cemetery, with funeral services performed by Brethren clergy.

EPILOGUE

The Emmerts had four more children in Carroll County between 1856 and 1867. However, by 1870 Mary had moved with the children to Dallas County, Iowa, where other members of her birth family then resided. There is no record found of Christian's death, but neither was he with his family in 1870 or 1880 in Iowa.
