Wiley was in the CSA and was captured and was sent to Tennessee, Delaware, Maryland, where he was paroled and exchanged for a prisoner on Christmas Day of 1864. On his walk back home to Arkansas, he had to swim the Mississippi River and he caught pneumonia and died in the Spring of 1865.
In a note from Mary Harriet A. Daniel to her cousin, Ada: She lists the male members of the William P. Daniel family as Harrel Daniel, Will Daniel, Walt Daniel, Hunley Daniel, and Jim Daniel. She says she thinks her father Wiley E. Daniel was "Wilie Elmus". The name "Elmus" probably came from a great uncle of Wiley. Wiley's mother had an uncle named Gulielmus Wiggins whom they called Elmus.)
