Dr. Sweeney was originally buried in Topeka Cemetery at the time of his passing in 1969. On September 15, 1993 Mr. Sweeney was disinterred to be cremated and buried at St. David's Episcopal Church where he served many years as a lay reader.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha (Maynard) Sweeney, at home; three sons, John Sweeney, Seattle, WA; Craig Sweeney of Topeka; Michael Sweeney of Lawrence, and three daughters, Michele Sweeney of Pueblo Colorado, Mary Catherine Sweeney of Topeka, and Sarah Brown of Topeka. His first wife, Virginia Sweeney of Topeka, also survives.

John grew up in the Chicago area, later getting his BA and MD at Johns Hopkins University. After marrying Virginia Lee Jackson, a year in the Navy and several medical residencies, he settled in Topeka, remaining until death. As an internist, he was noted for making house calls when that practice was dying out. He was also active in the 1960's civil rights movement. He was a stout man of the Church, a respected diagnostician and diligent father.
